LibriVox recording of The Hampstead Mystery, by John R. Watson and Arthur J. Rees.
A Murder Whodunit!
Location: Hampstead, England.
Victim: Sir Horace Fewbanks, a distinguished High Court judge.
Cause of death: gun shot wound.
Investigator: Private Detective Crewe, a wealthy bachelor who has taken up crime detection as a hobby, because it provides intellectual challenges more satisfying even than playing twelve simultaneous boards against Russian chess champion Turgieff. His sidekick Joe is a fourteen year old Cockney boy, whom Crewe saved from a life of crime by hiring him as a messenger-boy and shadower.
Other whodunit elements: clues galore, suspects in abundance, an inquest, a trial, and an elegant resolution.

Loved it
This is a great mystery, plausible upon reflection but not easily guessed. It keeps you involved throughout and my husband and I stayed up late to finish. The readers were good, I love the accents of "Losh Rolander" who does the majority of the reading.

Subject:
More twists than spiral pasta
Another edge of your seat book, and I loved it. A famouse judge is murdered. Private Inspector Crew (sp?) is hired by the daughter of the murdered man. But Scotland Yard is insulted by this and contrives to put Crew on a false scent, while building up their own case. This doesn't stop Crew, who continues his investigations and digs up plenty of evidence. But evidence leading to who? You will be guessing up until the last chapter. Enjoy!
